Ontario alt-country riser Sara May has a new LP with her group Falcon Jane, “Legacy” via Darling Records.  The record is said to explore May’s origin story “through the great archetypes of country music: the drinker, the vagabond, the absent father and, of course, the brokenhearted.” May’s partner and bandmate Andrew McArthur contributed to the album, which was produced by José Contreras of By Divine Right. Sara deftly presents these characters, flaws and all, with a clarity and empathy that feels almost transgressive, with a loving touch that seems to step too far across our current rural/urban social and political divides. But these are Sara’s stories too: her rural childhood, her time living in both the big City and the small rural towns, and her life on the road as a musician. She writes these characters, yes, but she’s lived them too.
